Augsburg has an active youth program for middle school and high school youth and a full-time Director of Student & Social Ministries, Emily Norris.
Middle and High school youth groups meet on most Sunday evenings for a meal followed by a program. Programs run the gamut from life choices, to bible study, to outreach activities, to fun group-building. Senior youth attend the ELCA national youth event which occurs every three years (next one is 2018). On in-between years, Senior Youth make service oriented mission trips to regional destinations. Middle school students take mission trips every year, the next one is planned for Colorado in 2016.
Youth participate in three different choirs based on age.
Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade go through Confirmation classes with Emily and the Pastors. Each class takes place for 10 weeks in the Spring for one hour. These classes follow Luther’s Small Catechism including 10 Commandments (6th grade) the Lord’s Prayer (7th grade) and The Apostle’s Creed (8th grade).
Students spend one week at Lutheridge for Campfirmation with Emily and the Pastors the summer after 7th grade and after 8th grade. Other youth and students are encouraged to attend Lutheridge as well.
Youth ministries at Augsburg receive programming support from the staff, and the Youth Ministry Committee and nearly twenty youth advisers. Adult members volunteer their time and skills as advisers to both groups. Parents of youth participate as chaperons as needed and provide the evening meals.
Augsburg also has a youth program for 3rd – 5th graders called the Youtherans. This group meets once a month for an activity that has been planned by the parents, who take turns leading this group. In the past, the group has gone ice skating, gone on scavenger hunts, baked and decorated Christmas cookies, gone to the movies, or just gotten together at the church to plan games.
