Stained Glass Window Tour

Arts at Augsburg

With Hearts & Hands & Voices

April 11-20, 2008

Augsburg Lutheran Church’s biennial arts festival seeks to glorify God through artistic creativity, and to provide opportunities for our congregation, friends, and neighbors to gather for events that are moving, inspiring, educational, beautiful, and occasionally riotously funny.

Festival Week

Friday, April 11, 7:00

Opening and Gala. We open the festival by gathering in the Sanctuary for a performance by Moving Liturgy, a professional dance troupe from Burlington directed by Jane Wellford; followed by hors d’oeuvres, dessert, and art in the Family Life Center. Two dance pieces will be performed with music played by organist Donald Armitage: Five Sacred Dances by local composer Margaret Sandresky, and There is a Time, set to Samuel Barber’s Adagio with readings from Ecclesiastes by Rob McOuat. At the party after the concert there will be an art show by members of the Congregation and a silent auction of members’ artwork to benefit Augsburg’s Charity Reserve.

Sunday, April 13, 11:00

The children’s and youth choirs will provide special music in the second service, joined by Flutes on Fourth, a professional flute choir (which practices on 4th Street on the 4th floor).

Sunday, April 13, 3:00

3 Hats. Michael Huie will present his one-man show, 3 Hats, which recreates the characters, the comedy and the unique art of three legends of the silent movie era: Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton. Huie’s ability to literally switch hats and alternately assume the personae of three of these great silent screen clowns is both remarkable and enormously entertaining. 3 Hats is suitable for all ages and runs about an hour.

Tuesday, April 15, noon

Bach’s Lunch featuring Laura Stevens, flutist. Laura has degrees in flute performance from Salem College and NCSA and is currently pursuing a doctorate at UNC-Greensboro. Laura will play music by Bach, Debussy, and Honegger; and she will be joined by her father-inlaw, Bill Stevens, for the première of Seven Important Songs for Tenor and Flute. Lunch provided with reservation.(call the church office, 722-8144)

Thursday, April 17, noon

Bach’s Lunch featuring Tyra Somers, harpist. Tyra will demonstrate and discuss harps from a small lap harp (Irish harp) to a full-size concert harp. This will be a beautiful and informative mini-concert not to be missed. Lunch provided with reservation.(call the church office, 722-8144)

Sunday, April 20, 11:00

The Denison Singers Alumni Choir, led by Dr. William Osborne, makes their second appearance at Augsburg, and will be in the choir loft for the second service.

Sunday, April 20, 3:00

The festival finale will feature our adult choir, The Denison Singers Alumni Choir, and two brass choirs in choral and instrumental works from the Baroque era to the 21st century. You will hear masterpieces by Schütz, Gabrieli, Vaughan Williams, and more. This will be a rousing end to our fourth festival.

Before the Festival there will be a series of workshops:

Saturday, January 26, 9:00am

Floorcloth Workshop. Floorcloths are a centuries-old tradition involving painting, stamping, or stenciling heavy canvas. Brightly colored floorcloths add fun and color to any décor and can be as simple or as complex as you want. Led by Joanna Britt. Floorcloth Workshop

Saturday, February 23, 9:00am

Altered Books. Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, this workshop will give you license to play, paint, cut and tear up an existing book and remake it into a work of art exploring your spiritual journey. And best of all, there are no rules, no wrong paths, and no mistakes, which makes altered books accessible and wonderful. Led by Benita van Winkle. Altered Books Workshop

Sunday, March 30, 9:45 am

Literary workshop. Edwin C. Wilson, Provost Emeritus and former Professor of English at Wake Forest, will Discuss Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. In its 1945 review The New York Times called Brideshead Revisited, “Evelyn Waugh’s finest achievement.” Many consider Waugh to be the best English author of the twentieth century and this book is on Time Magazine’s list of the best books of all times. Edwin Wilson is on everyone’s list of favorite Wake Forest figures.
