About: Congregational Council
A Congregational Council is established in Article III of the Augsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church bylaws to manage the affairs of the Augsburg congregation. The Council consists of the pastors and twenty-one members of the congregation. Council members serve staggered terms of three years, with seven members elected annually at the congregational meeting.
The Council is headed by a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary and a Treasurer, who, along with the pastors, constitute the executive committee. The President and Vice-President must be members of the Council, whereas the Secretary and Treasurer are required only to be members of the congregation.
The primary responsibility of the Council is to lead the congregation in implementing Augsburg’s mission statement. It oversees the activities and resources of the congregation and presents a budget to the congregation for approval at the annual congregational meeting. The activities and ministries of the congregation are implemented by the various standing committees, who report on their activities at council meetings. Each standing committee is chaired by a member of Council, and seeks membership among a broad cross-section of the congregation who have an interest or expertise in the work of the committee.
